ArchEngBuild Challenge 2024
Welcome to ArchEngBuild, a competition that brings together New Zealand’s future industry leaders! The ArchEngBuild Challenge is an intensive 3-day competition for New Zealand tertiary students studying architecture, engineering or construction management.
Students are encouraged to self-nominate to take part in this intensive 3-day competition, bringing together 30 of the country’s best students in architecture, engineering and construction management.
The winning team will take home NZ$10,000!
Nominations are now open for 2024:
Friday 1 March – Friday 26 April 2024
Location for competition:
Christchurch, New Zealand
(If selected, all transport and accommodation costs are covered)
Event dates:
Tuesday 2 July – Thursday 4 July 2024
The challenge
ArchEngBuild brings together New Zealand’s future industry leaders. Thirty of the country’s best architecture, engineering and construction management students take part in this intensive 3-day real-life client brief competition held this year in Christchurch. They work together to deliver a concept design in response to a project brief. The project brief addresses issues faced by industry and allows the students to come up with creative and innovative solutions.
Students utilise their existing knowledge and draw on professional advice and resources made available to them at the event. During their studies, these students don’t usually get the chance to work with other disciplines. ArchEngBuild nurtures collaboration and innovation at the beginning of the careers of our future construction industry leaders.
The ArchEngBuild Challenge:
The creativity and innovation the students bring always impresses the ArchEngBuild judges. Seeing how their teammates think and make decisions has made a real difference in past participants’ work lives. Their designs are also showcased at the awards evening, allowing current industry leaders within the sector to view and network with the students.
The team’s mission is to enhance the environment of the host town or city while also demonstrating effective inter-disciplinary collaboration.
Get involved
Challenge participants are selected from a pool of student self-nominations or nominations by representatives from tertiary education organisations (for example, heads of departments or lecturers).
If you are a final-year architecture, engineering or construction management student ready to take on a challenge of delivering a concept design in response to a challenging, future-focused project brief, nominate yourself here:
CLICK HERE TO NOMINATE YOURSELF TODAY!
What can students expect?
Students can expect an intense 3 days of hard but hugely rewarding hands-on work. There are only 50 hours to meet their team mates, hear the project brief for the first time and deliver their project pitch to the judges, so the teams will work hard under pressure - and become a little sleep deprived!
With experienced industry professionals on hand to mentor and encouragement by the organising team, students receive invaluable early career experience plus make new friends and contacts from across the construction sector.
How to get involved - students:
Challenge participants are selected from the pool of self-nomination submissions or a nomination from their tertiary education organisation representative (for example, heads of department or lecturers).
Are you a final year student studying either architecture, engineering or construction management in New Zealand and interested in being part of the ArchEngBuild 2024 Challenge?
Simply tell us why you think you’d be the right kind of person to be at the ArchEngBuild Challenge. How you choose to impress organisers is up to you. Just make sure you stand out!
If you are a lecturer and want to nominate a student, please do so by emailing archengbuild@branz.co.nz.

The ArchEngBuild Challenge:
- recreates a real-life client brief, giving students a unique work experience before they start their working life - the client brief reflects the host city’s aspirations and issues
- offers the chance for students to experience cross-disciplinary collaboration, often for the first time
- encourages students to use the latest building materials, innovations and technology in their designs
- gives students access to mentors from industry associations
- creates valuable networking opportunities
- is a very attractive addition to a student’s CV.

International Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering (ISMA2024)
The 2024 Leuven Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering will be held September 9-11. It is the 31st international conference in a series of annual courses and biennial conferences on structural dynamics, modal testing and noise and vibration engineering, organised by the KU Leuven Department of Mechanical Engineering. In good tradition, ISMA2024 will join forces again with the International Conference on Uncertainty in Structural Dynamics - USD2024, which will be at its 10th edition. A single registration will grant online access to both conferences.
The conference provides a forum for engineers, researchers, and other professionals active in the field of modelling, analysing, testing and improving the noise and vibration characteristics of mechanical and mechatronic systems and civil structures. A strong emphasis is on combining excellent academic research activities with top-notch industrial innovations and applications. The conference combines expertise in the ‘noise’ and ‘vibration’ fields by stressing common measurement, modelling, analysis and control technologies and leveraging upon new paradigms such as digital twin, model-based system engineering and artificial intelligence. The meeting will provide a further impetus to the cross-fertilization of ideas in both areas.
The conference program will include keynote lectures, tutorials and invited and contributed papers in specialised areas of noise and vibration engineering and structural dynamics. The focus of the conference is on experimental and numerical methods, with special attention to recent applications in vehicle, machine and civil engineering. Fields with a strong interaction between noise and vibration behaviour will be stressed. Modal analysis and structural dynamic testing remain one of the backbones of the conference, and herein we would like to emphasise limiting factors such as product and test uncertainty as well as applications in the field of smart monitoring and damage assessment. The continuous link between real assets and their digital counterparts is also exploited in the digital twin, enabling noise and vibration research innovations and industrial applications.
